The Day in Hospital

Your pet requires a procedure.  Don’t worry, we will look after you both. Our dedicated team will hold your pet’s paw every step of the way. A safe procedure relies on doing ‘our homework ‘ first. On the day your veterinarian will examine your pet  to make sure we are OK.

There are several measures to consider to ensure your  pet’s procedure is as safe as possible.

Pre Anaesthetic blood test

We have blood tests before going into hospital. It’s the same for pets! The test screens for changes that are not obvious on physical examination. It ensures the internal organs are healthy an able to cope with an anaesthetic. It’s essential protection for your senior pets over 8.

As for our younger pets a screen is a very wise decision. We never know if they could have a birth problem that would complicate a procedure. These results set a baseline allowing us to track any changes that could affect your pet later in life. Tracking and early detection is a key part of your pet’s long term preventative health plan.

Intravenous (drip) fluid therapy: During anaesthesia blood pressure drops. Poor blood pressure can lead to internal organ failure. A drip maintains blood pressure and flow to vital organs. It also make for a rapid more comfortable recovery . They are so much more clear headed and happier when they wake up.

Pain relief: All surgical procedures are painful. Your pets feel pain the same way we do but, often it's difficult for them to tell us. It's a clinically proven fact that pain relief speeds up recovery. At HPVH all pets are prescribed pain relief where appropriate. No one likes to be in pain.

Vaccination, microchipping,  worming, flea control & heartworm prevention
With a brief stay in hospital it’s  a good chance to ensure worming, flea control, heart worm prevention, microchipping  and vaccinations are up to date. We are often able to perform these  additional procedures on the  on the same day. Just ask!.
